The old speakers I built myself 32 years ago with ribbon tweeter and 10 cm midrange were wider and lower because of the 30 cm woofer. Compared to the Ultima, they were, well, more noisy. How will we keep them as party speakers. The Ultima 40s are a clear statement, even from the outside. They stand in a four-metre-high room with an open roof pitch. Many corners and edges, fir wood and cork provide damping and good acoustics. It starts with Laura Jurd: To the Earth. The first impression: Wow! What a clean and differentiated sound! We continue with jazz: Duke Ellington, Yumi Ito, Garbarek. Then classical music. A cello concerto by Elgar, the piano bagatelles by Beethoven. A selection of opera music is also convincing. But Reihnahrd Mey, Martin Garrix, AC DC, Cash and Gallagher also come across well. Our Marantz amplifier is actually a size too small for the Ultima 40, but it is not intended to test the limits of the technology. The volume is always (or mostly) in the moderate range. The sound of the speakers is powerful, but not obtrusive. It is not necessary to "turn it up", music and speech are clearly and recognisably placed in the room. Of course, at 65 years of age, we no longer have the hearing of a young person, but it's still pleasingly good. The Ultima 40 convinced us. A great pair of speakers in this price range!
